"The House at Creepy Lake" I guess it was a mistake to buy the house at Creepy Lake. But the broker kept on raving about the monster savings. “You have made an excellent choice,” said a disembodied voice. I really should be more judicious about who I listen to. Soon as I paid the deposit zombies poured out of the closet. Poltergeists of various shapes, werewolves on roller skates. They seemed a colorful bunch and so I offered lunch. A lifetime in New York had taught me to be open-minded. For a year we lived in perfect harmony playing hop-scotch in the moonlight. But our fun ended when the house next door was sold to a singer-songwriter. On a dreadful evening he came outside to sing about the problems in his life a world of pain and strife. The monsters were horrified. They howled and they cried. “We can’t listen to him moan. We’ll have to leave our home.” I said, “Wait up for me. I’m moving back to the city.” And that’s the story of the house I bought at Creepy Lake. (c) 2009 Kenny Young

"Solitary Sentinel" I am a solitary sentinel On my post, waiting for you No matter when the subway train arrives I'll be here to look out for you 'Cause that's what I do They put you on the super super late shift And even though I know The creatures of the night are mostly friendly I'll feel better when you're home Besides it's not good being alone If even one creature of the night has ambiguous intentions I am a solitary sentinel On my post, waiting for you No matter when the subway train arrives I'll be here to look out for you 'Cause that's what I do Street lamp shadows on the block The moon is perfectly clear I get an extrasensory twinge That tells me you're getting near Who's that man over there? Is he a potential foe? Or is he someone just like me Waiting for his late shift to show? I am a solitary sentinel On my post, waiting for you No matter when the subway train arrives I'll be here to look out for you 'Cause that's what I do

"There Must Be a Thing to Celebrate" Well, there must be a thing to celebrate Let's celebrate tonight Daylight Savings—that's just great! Let's celebrate tonight Yeah yeah! I repeat: Yeah yeah! You didn't hit your boss with a two-by-four Let's celebrate tonight Fell asleep at your desk, but you didn't snore Let's celebrate tonight Yeah yeah! Did I say: Yeah yeah? To not mark this moment might be a mistake I'll bring the spork, if you'll bring the cake And a beverage … You taught your goldfish how to wink Let's celebrate tonight There's nothing malevolent in your sink Let's celebrate tonight Your arch enemy got stuck in traffic Let's celebrate tonight Your car wrote a book—It's autobiographic Let's celebrate tonight Yeah yeah! One last yeah yeah!

"Big Bang of a Heart" It was a singular moment A cataclysmic event “I feel so strange” I told you at the start I didn't know about the big bang of a heart The galaxies we now explore Did they really exist before? How did I miss so much? I guess I wasn't smart. 'Til you told me about the big bang of a heart With a big bang of a heart The rules I knew all broke down My cosmological equations were all wrong I can see the universe is now a better place Sharing time and space with you No matter how far out we go There's still a radiating glow Sometimes good comes When things blow apart I thank you for the big bang of a heart

"Everything's Looking Up in Subterranea" There's no room left on the surface world So they built luxury towers underground, and now Everything's looking up in Subterranea In dark foreboding towers where phosphorescent rodents live People in business suits are making phone calls to their brokers Everything's looking up in Subterranea Subterranea ... Isn't it ironic that the upper crust are moving in? A robot ferry captain takes you through an aqueduct to work Or if you are ambitious you can commute by spelunking Everything's looking up in Subterranea Subterranea … It used to be a place where even drummers could afford to live

"Troubador of Love" Troubador of love A full-time occupation Bringing love songs to remote locations Wherever I'm requested I will go Out in the desert sun On islands in the ocean I help the tongue-tied describe their emotions But now and then I'd like to get to sing to you, oh yeah Troubador of love Ooh ooh whee It's my destiny But I don't want fame and glory All I want is to hold you at night Troubador of love Dog-sledding 'cross the Arctic Another mission, a teenager is heartsick And no one in his igloo understands Now up a mountain I hike among the goatherds Called by a couple who cannot find the right words I hope that I can help and then go home to you Troubador of love Ooh ooh whee It's my destiny You can keep your fame and glory I'll be there to see you tonight hold you tonight love you tonight

"Attack of the Maniac Librarian" I fell asleep while surfing through the Sunday Times Man, I had a crazy dream I was at the public library When a battle-axe swung out at me It split my periodical in two The attack of the maniac librarian Eight foot three, bloodthirsty and he was chasing me I tried to wake myself by screaming but I stopped 'cause he said “Shhh” Then he swung his axe again I did not want to fall victim to Dewey's decimation system so I ran from Horror to Poetry The attack of the maniac librarian He was well-read, but not well in the head and most likely dead Thinking quickly, I picked out Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman and I put it with the books on gardening The maniac ranted and cursed But he went to re-shelve the book first and that's when I made my escape from The attack of the maniac librarian It was only a dream, but I won't be borrowing any books for a while

"Love Glows Where You Go" Electricity, literally is crackling around you It thrills me every time you light up like a firefly Love glows where you go There are sparkly bits you emit as we walk our block tonight It thrills me to be with you It is the world's greatest show Love glows where you go Later downhill, at the harbor your light keeps tugs and barges safe You can hear them blow their foghorns gratefully I like it when you fly, and fill the sky with flickering, falling stars It thrills me every time you pretend it's the Fourth of July Just like a firefly Love glows where you go

about

Kenny Young and the Eggplants Brooklyn, New York

Kenny Young and the Eggplants play intergalactic folk-and-roll songs about giant squirrels, scary bits of cheese, and malevolent washing machines. The New York Times said they give “eloquent voice to the multifaceted neuroses of prolonged adolescence.” The Sunday Herald said they “mix the wit of Jonathan Richman with the sound of the Nico-era Velvets to create a surreal and satirical gumbo.” ... more
